A Step-By-Step Guide to the Home Remodeling Process

Remodeling can be a complex task, but in the hands of professionals, it's as easy as 1-2-3!

Welcome to Remodeling 101, brought to you by none other than Universal Group INC. We know that not every home renovation project works in the same order, some might want to follow a particular course to help avoid extra work. For example, some of our clients don’t want to close walls and paint, only to realize later that they need to add a new plumbing stack that requires going behind the wall again after the work has already started.

Going through each step of the remodeling process can help you choose by altering the structure of your home. You have to ask yourself if the project lies within your budget and if the timing is right.

Here at Universal Group, we like to take a distinctive approach to remodeling, making the kitchen or bath remo process easier and less stressful for everyone.

What are the stages of the home remodeling process?

1. Make a plan: first things first, evaluate what you’d like to renovate and install primarily. That includes deciding where and when to start, and making sure you have the time and resources required to get the job done.

2. Set an honest budget: structure a budget and set a final cipher on how much you want (and can) to spend on the project. A tip from our pros: get a budget with an extra 10 to 20 percent for unexpected costs that may come along the project.

3. Talk to your insurance agent: it’s never a bad idea to contact your insurance agent to help make sure you’re well covered for your project. Once the process is complete, you could recheck the coverage so you can make sure it fits your needs.

4. Hire a contractor: the time has come; research and select a contractor with whom you feel comfortable (get to know us at Universal Group INC by asking for our references). Then, be sure to sign contracts that help define the extent of work and the process to answer to future problems, if any.

5. Have your permits and order materials on check: this is often required in many municipalities. They can also be crucial to avoid having to redo/undo work. Make sure your contractor checks your municipality’s latest laws since inspection rules change and vary from locations to locations.

After you get your permits all sorted out, you should also start ordering the necessary materials like lumber, drywall, new windows, doors, etc.

6. Start demolition: once you have all your materials at hand and the job site has been inspected, it’s time to start with the demolition. If space is being added, then framing is in order. On the other hand, if walls within are being moved, it’s necessary to install any new windows and doors.

7. Work behind the walls: after demolition comes the time for critical work behind walls, below floors, and above ceilings (such as plumbing, electrical, heating, and air conditioning rough-ins, subfloors, and insulation works). After that process patch, hang drywall, tape, and sand for smooth exterior surfaces.

8. Paint and install flooring: a few contractors may want to finish flooring first, while most of them prefer to prime and paint before working on the floor (to prevent damaging with spills the new flooring). This order also depends on your contractors’ deadlines.

9. Installing the cabinets: when walls and floors are all placed, the room begins to resemble the final idea. Cabinets are installed by this time, with the upper ones being put before lower ones.

10. Finishing touches: it’s now the time to add those last details and decorations, including final painting, backsplashes, floor sealing, light fixtures, hardware, and any other touch-ups on the esthetical department.

Voilà! Our experts and professionals at Universal Group INC know all the stages, highs and lows of the remodeling process and will be glad to work for you to get the home of your dreams. Please follow us on our social networks if you have any questions or want to contact us for future contracts.
